Ziken Labs’ poll Discord bot “Votex” is used by 100 servers!

At Ziken Labs, we work to help you scale your business through a smart mixture of innovation and experience in marketing, growth, and analytics tools.

For this reason, we are extremely proud to announce that Votex, our poll Discord bot developed by Giordano Alberti, is now being implemented on more than 100 servers. Votex is a poll bot designed for Discord that allows community admins to set different weights for the roles of members, so that votes in a motion are balanced according to the multiplier of each role.

Oh, yes, and it’s free!

Discord polls, why you need them in your server

Discord’s user base changed over time. Quite a bit. It all began with gamers that wanted to chat in real time about a specific game they were playing. It was used for casual chit-chat but also to organize strategies to go on in the game. Sometimes even to tell other players off for some disrespectful action that went against the gamers’ code of conduct.

But that was the beginning. The platform features and the fact that it’s definitely directed to a tech-savvy public helped the transition to a wider user base that has nothing to do with gaming anymore. It’s now the domain of creators, DAOs, communities, and even some schools and institutions, and in general communities that revolve around participation and inclusion. And here comes the main reason why you need to implement a poll Discord bot in your server.

Polls are essential to include your community members and make them feel that they matter to the development of your project. They’re the most direct way to allow participation in the choices that will shape the community’s future. And people dig that!

What are weighted polls exactly?

For those that are not very familiar with statistics, the term weighted poll might sound quite strange and unclear. A poll is a question put to a certain number of people, usually serving the purpose of checking opinions, vote intentions (in a political environment), and in general a certain public sentiment towards a certain topic. But polls can be biased. And this is a problem because it deprives them of their value.

Let’s use a very simple and quite popular example to explain what we mean by that.

Let’s say that we want to survey 100 people on a certain topic, and we get 70% of the answers from men and the remaining 30% from women. This apparently poses no problem to the survey, since we put out a question and people answered.

But the fact that there is a gap between the actual population distribution, which is in reality 50% men and 50% women (approx. and worldwide), and the demographics of our survey (70/30), shows that our poll has a problem of representativity. To put it simply, the results of our poll are biased towards the male population, which means that the female population is underrepresented. This ultimately invalidates the results, because if we were to make a choice, apply a policy or something else in our community based on them, we would automatically exclude part of our members.

How do we solve this? Adding the so called multipliers to the demographic segment that is underrepresented, so that we can close the gap. This is the reason why we created our own poll Discord bot, which has exactly that feature embedded in it, in order to allow your polls to be more representative of the reality of your community. But first things first. To use it, you need to install it.

How to install Votex, a step by step guide

Our poll Discord bot Votex features six main /commands that allow you to manage the polls.

/poll

This is the command to start your poll. You will need to set the following parameters:

  • Question: this introduces the main theme you need to ask your community about
  • Answers: this will allow you to list the possible options to answer your Question
  • Expiration: this is the parameter by which you decide the whole duration of the poll

/stop

You can decide for any reason to stop your poll at any time, even if it has not expired yet.

/cancel

This command erases the poll and the partial results you obtained till the moment you decide to erase it, if you cancel the poll before its expiration date

/role

This is a very important command, since it sets the basis on which you will then be able to weigh your poll. It comes with three parameters:

  • Role: this is the mention of the role you want to edit
  • Allowed: by this parameter you define which roles in your community are allowed to take part in the poll and vote
  • Multiplier: the signature feature of Votex poll Discord bot, this parameter allows you to assign a multiplier to a role, which you know to be normally underrepresented and by doing so you create a weighted poll

/roles

This command allows for the delivery of a message to all the specified roles, telling them all the preferences that have been set

/embed

This command allows you to determine some of your poll appearance features. The relevant parameters are:

  • Name: by which you give your embed a denomination
  • Image: by which you determine the Embed’s image URL
  • Color: by which you can determine the Embed’s color (either by its name, like YELLOW or by its hex code “#FFFF00”)

Now, let’s install your Votex poll Discord bot together.

Invite Votex to your Server - Ziken Labs

Step 1: learn about Votex and get started

The first step is to become more familiar with Votex and visit the relevant page at top.gg. There, you will find some more info on this bot.

Step 2: invite Votex to your server(s)

You will have to actually invite the bot on the server or servers you want to use it on. This process can be done one server at a time, you can’t simultaneously add Votex to all the servers you are the admin of.

Step 3: Permissions settings – server

In order to be allowed to work on your server, Votex needs to have access to some permissions:

  • Manage roles
  • Manage channels
  • Send messages
  • Read the message history
  • Use applications commands

Step 4: Permission settings – channel

After giving the general permissions for the server, you will be required to consent to the ones specific to the channel you want to carry out the poll on, and namely:

  • See channel
  • Manage channel
  • Send messages
  • Attach files
  • Add links
  • Read the message history
  • Use applications commands

At this point, you will be able to see the commands of the Votex poll Discord bot we mentioned before (/poll, /stop, /cancel etc).

Step 5: Roles and relevant voting weight

This is the phase in which you set the roles that can take part in the poll (which implies that you can exclude some of them) and the relevant weight in the poll (applying the signature feature of Ziken Labs’ Votex: the multiplier).

You will have to set the parameters for this command:

  • Role: this is the mention of the role you want to edit
  • Allowed: by this parameter you define which roles in your community are allowed to take part in the poll and vote
  • Multiplier: the signature feature of Votex, this parameter allows you to assign a multiplier to a role, which you know to be normally underrepresented and by doing so you create a weighted poll

Please note that if you do not set a role, the poll will be open to all the roles in the channel, and if you do not set a multiplier the automatic multiplier value will be 1, which means that every vote will count equally.

Step 6: the various roles weight

Before and after launching the poll, you can check the weight of each individual role that is allowed to participate in the poll.

Step 7: It’s launch time!

At this point, after all the necessary parameters are set, you can finally launch your first poll on Votex!

Step 8: Why not make your poll cooler by customization?

This elective feature allows you to add a personal touch to your poll appearance and decide to imprint your style on it. You can choose the Name, image and color of choice of your poll.

Step 9: It’s on

Start empowering your community by collecting the results of your polls and adapting your project to your people’s desires and needs.

4 Reasons you should use Votex

Now, you will be wondering why you should use a bot since, starting from April 2024 all Discord servers have the option to launch a survey or poll inside their communities.

Discord decided to implement this possibility into their system because a lot of users were requesting it.

Using bots can create some confusion and certainly adds to the noise in the channels, so to speak.

So, we feel obliged to provide some ground reasons to choose our bot:

  1. Weighted vote: as we explained before, this elective feature is very important in getting results that are really representative of your community, and that at the end of the day will result in a better participation of its members to your server’s activities
  2. Customization: Votex allows you to customize your polls, allowing you to give them your preferred style
  3. Participation: your community will have access to a fair and transparent voting system, that will give them the feeling of belonging required to enhance participation
  4. Fool-proof: it’s extremely easy to use, so that launching a poll will be a no-brainer

Bonus reason: it’s free!

If you are going to take part in a DAO, an NFT project, or a community of any kind, Discord is the go-to platform. Started as a dignified platform for gamers, it evolved so much that there were rumors that Microsoft was offering 10 billion USD to acquire the company.

One of the key features of making a community work, however, is participation. And nothing speaks of participation and inclusivity as a weighted poll. Votex, a Discord tool developed by Ziken Labs, is the Discord poll bot you’re looking for to make your community members’ voice count and guarantee relevance, inclusion and representativity.
